Matthew Butler, the host of Believe in People, has worked in the substance misuse field for over ten years. As the Service User Involvement Lead, he is dedicated to amplifying the voices of service users and tackling the stigma they face.


Matthew's experience has given him a deep understanding of the complexities of addiction, allowing him to challenge preconceived notions and share the lived experiences of those who have overcome significant challenges. His approach reflects a commitment to believing in people and supporting their potential for change, while actively combating the stigma that often hinders recovery.

Robbie Lawson

Robbie Lawson is the producer of Believe in People and the creative lead behind its editorial direction. With nearly two decades of experience across charity management, education, the NHS and frontline recovery services, 


Robbie is driven by a commitment to using media to inspire change and challenge stigma. He has worked in both mainstream and mission-led media, including guest presenting on MTV’s Total Request Live in New York, before turning his focus to health communication and advocacy. 


Now serving as Marketing Lead, Robbie curates each episode with care - aligning content with national campaigns and amplifying voices from the recovery community. His approach ensures the podcast remains a bold, compassionate space where lived experience drives understanding and transformation.

Paula McGowan OBE

Paula McGowan OBE is a multi award-winning activist committed to improving equality in health and social care for people with learning disabilities and/or autism. Qualifying as an early years practitioner in 1985, she specialised in supporting neurodivergent children and has long advocated for inclusive, person-centred support.


Following the preventable death of her teenage son Oliver, Paula led a successful parliamentary petition calling for mandatory learning disability and autism training for health and social care staff. This led to the introduction of Learning Disability and Autism Training into law through the Health and Social Care Act.


Paula now focuses on the national rollout of the training and the development of the statutory Code of Practice, regularly advising Ministers. Her work has been recognised with an OBE in 2021 and an Honorary University Fellowship in 2023.

Young Lee is a recovered addict, counsellor, lecturer, and recovery coach based in Yorkshire, where he works at a 12-step abstinence-based rehab supporting individuals through deep personal transformation. Once an in-demand DJ sharing line-ups with the likes of Idris Elba and Mary J. Blige, Young’s life spiralled into heroin and crack cocaine addiction, drug dealing, and total collapse.
