Believe in People: Addiction, Recovery & Stigma

#24 - Kevin Kennedy: Alcohol Culture, Addiction, Coronation Street, The West End & 25 Years in Recovery

Matthew Butler Season 1 Episode 23

Matt is joined by Kevin Kennedy, actor and musician, best known for playing the character Curly Watts for 20 years in ITV's long-running television soap opera Coronation Street.

Kevin serves as director of Kennedy Street recovery services, a peer-led, registered charity that offers support and signposting to people who want to recover from addiction as well as professional advice and coaching service to the business sector.

Kevin had a very public battle with his alcohol addiction until he entered active recovery 25 years ago. Now an advocate of recovery, he dedicates much of his time to helping others. Today, Kevin and Matt discuss:

  • Addiction, recovery and how to live a healthy and sober life.
  • His history of alcoholism and the reprieve of playing a loved character.
  • Understanding the importance of peer support and asking for help.
  • Musical theatre and hidden gigs in the Manchester music scene.
  • Offering practical advice to others.
